It is also possible to artificially increase melanin production. You can do this by taking supplements that contain tyrosine or else by using some skin cream. Tyrosine is a chemical that promotes melanin production. However, it has not been proven how much tyrosine it actually takes to make a difference.
Other factors that affect pigmentation levels are the genes you inherit from your parents and the environment that you live in. One example is that people who grow up in rural areas tend to have lighter skin than people who live in cities. Urban environments expose you to more UV light, which results in an increased production of melanin. These increased melanin levels are what cause uneven pigmentation. If you know that your melanin levels are abnormally low, you can take measures to increase your levels. You can use an airbrush to apply the right amount of sunscreen to your body or even use self-tanning lotion.
It is possible to get rid of some pigment marks if you have naturally darker skin than other people. Some techniques are available that can permanently reduce the pigment content. One example is called bleaching. Bleaching is when a bleaching solution is applied to the surface of the skin. The colour of the skin will darken in a short time. This technique can only be used on skin that contains melanin, so individuals with very light skin should stay away from bleaching treatments.
If you already have very uneven pigmentation, you may wish to visit a dermatologist. Your doctor might recommend you to use retinoid cream for the treatment. Retinoids are substances that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in your body. They do not cause any sun exposure by themselves. When they are used as an aid to combat the discolouration caused by sun exposure, they will improve the tone of your skin. If the doctor determines that your sun exposure has caused the discolouration, he or she may recommend using retinoid cream as an alternative to the sun.
