summerheat-healthylife-werindia

Summer means outdoor activities, hot temperature and sweating. Sometimes we stay back indoor at home or office and allow body to cool down. All does not have privilege of AC and there are people who work hard in bright Sun. When we expose to hot weather we know what happens to the body. To beat summer heat whether indoor or outdoor here are tips from grandma.
1. Use Sun blockers: Hang a damp sheet on the open window when the outside air is dry and cooler than inside. Block the Sun by closing curtain and blinds. Use white shades to cover window to reduce heat absorption
2. Ventilation: Give enough ventilation to all rooms. Run fans or AC if you have. This will keep body cool. If you need run humidifier especially at night. Keeping temperature around 23 to 25C will give good sleep.
3. Close fireplace: Open fireplace pulls hot air into house. Close fire place damper and close windows and doors closed if outside temperature crossed 75F
4. Wear cotton cloths: Cotton cloths keeps you cool at summer. Synthetic material makes it hotter for the body.
5. Stay hydrated: Perspiration and sweating reduces water in body causing dehydration. Drink cool water and avoid alcohol and sugary drinks. Keep excessive sweat at bay. Infuse water with lime, mint, citrus or cut ripe fruits. Drinking coconut water helps to reduce heat.
6. Look for cool places: If you don’t have AC at home, see out cool places – restaurants, malls, library. Taking a break from heat gives lot of relief
7. Go easy on exercise: Too much exercise in hot summer can increase body pain and inflammation. Evening and early morning are best time to exercise during summer. Drink more water if you go for walk or outdoor activities.
8. Eat light: Heavy meals will overload stomach. Instead, have liquid foods – cold soup, salads, fruits and raw vegetables will help body to be cool.
9. Shower: Have quick shower in between. It does not have to be a long water wasting shower. A quick rinse in cold water/ a splash will help. Or wet a towel and wipe your body with cold water.
10. Apply oil: If your body feels tired because of heat, apply coconut oil on legs and hands.
11. Swimming: Take a dip on swimming pool. Many gyms have swimming facility.
12. Wear hat: Whenever you step out wear a hat and if you feel like wear sunglasses. Hat keeps head somewhat cool and sunglasses protects from hot sun, dust and radiation.
13. Use cucumber: Place cut cucumbers in fridge and place them on eyes to beat heat effect on eyes. It removes dark circles and puffiness around eyes.
14. Cool sheets: If your body is too hot and bed feels hot too then it won’t be comfortable to sleep. Try this – keep sheets in a plastic bag and store in freezer for half an hour or so. Spread sheets on bed and go to sleep!
15. Aromatherapy: Use essential oils diffuser – rose or lavender before going to bed to relax and cool down.

Parsley Tea Benefits – How To Make Parsley Tea At Home

Parsley Tea Benefits – How To Make Parsley Tea At Home

Many people may dismiss a body cleanse or detox, saying that it’s up to the kidneys and the liver to screen out waste and toxins, but even they don’t do it alone. The body’s organs need plenty of water and beneficial nutrients do their jobs. If you starve your body, you’re not providing the nutrition that every organ in your body needs to function at its best.

parsley tea benefits

There are many different ways to do a full body cleanse or a detox. Some involve complex fruit and vegetable juicing methods for weeks on end. Others are as simple as drinking a cup or two of parsley tea each day.

A parsley tea detox will help your body rid itself of toxins, harmful chemicals and substances, such as nicotine, alcohol, and even the pollution that’s in the air we breathe. Parsley has long been used as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and a diuretic in traditional folk medicine.

While you may not be as familiar with a parsley tea detox, it’s still good for helping many diseases and conditions.

How is Parsley Tea Made?

Parsley tea is made from parsley, a type of green herb, and hot water. Many people know that eating fresh parsley after a meal can help to boost the digestive system, particularly after eating spicy foods. It can help to calm and soothe the stomach, and help to ease the discomfort of over-eating.

Parsley is packed full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. There are many active compounds in the tea that help the body. While some people enjoy adding the herb to their food, it’s much easier to ingest in larger quantities in tea form.

9 of the Top Cleansing & Detoxing Benefits of Parsley Tea

Parsley has minimal calories and zero fat, but is packed full of vitamins A, C, and K; and minerals such as folate, iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It also contains many omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-6 fatty acids, dietary fibre, and even a bit of protein. Here are 9 of the top cleansing and detoxing benefits of parsley tea.

1. Packed Full of Essential Oils That Protect from Cancer

Parsley is full of many volatile oil components. These oils are what essential oils are comprised of. Just some of these are myristicin, limonene, eugenol and alpha-thujene. These essential oils provide a boost to the body’s immune system. They help to fight off cancerous invaders in the body. They can help to slow tumours, and help to prevent carcinogens from hurting the body.

They also reduce the oxidative stress on the body’s organs. Parsley is often called one of the “chemoprotective” plants, as it can protect the body’s DNA from damage during cancer drug treatments. It prevents the death of healthy cells. It’s been particularly beneficial in treatment for women with breast cancer. This is due to hindering the development of cancerous cells, and preventing them from multiplying.

2. Helps to Relieve Bloating from Food Intolerances

Many people suffer bloating from food intolerances. Their bodies don’t adequately digest the proteins in certain foods, leading to inflammation inside the gut. This pressure and gas can be extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing.

Parsley tea can help soothe the digestive tract, from stomach and down through the intestines and colon. The healing compounds in parsley can also help to draw out excess water in the abdomen, which will help to decrease discomfort and indigestion.

3. Contains High Number of Free-Radical Fighting Antioxidants

Parsley contains a large number of antioxidants. These are special flavonoids that fight off disease in the body. Just some of the ones that are found in parsley include lycopene, beta carotene, and alpha carotene.

These antioxidants work to fight off the damage that free radicals can do inside the body, but are particularly helpful for the body’s organs. These free radicals can cause cancer, heart disease, eye disorders, degenerative diseases, and even aging. Drinking parsley tea can help lower the impact of free radicals on the body. It can even reverse the signs of stress and aging on the body.

4. Acts As a Natural Diuretic

When the body’s kidneys aren’t functioning properly, that can lead to water retention. Women can also suffer water retention during a bad menstrual cycle. This can lead to extreme discomfort. Drinking parsley tea will help to eliminate this excess fluid from the body.

Even though drinking more water-based drinks, such as parsley tea, seems counter-productive, it’s actually recommended for people who suffer fluid retention, as it’s helps the body’s organs to function better. The compounds within the parsley tea will help the body expel the excess fluids to make you feel more comfortable.

5. Generally Improves Digestion

Drinking parsley tea will help to not only cure a variety of digestive ailments but help to prevent them in the first place. It can help soothe bloating, indigestion, and nausea. You can drink the tea before a meal out, or when you think you might be eating a lot of spicy foods, or foods that you think will upset your stomach. The tea can help to prevent this discomfort.

Parsley tea can help gas to quickly pass along. The compounds inside the essential oils in the parsley are what is responsible for restoring proper enzyme function to the digestive tract. It also helps to produce the necessary gastric juices and bile for digestion.

6. Packed Full of Immune-Boosting Vitamin C

Parsley tea is full of high levels of antioxidants. One of the most familiar antioxidants is vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for maintaining a healthy gut, which is where much of the body’s immune function is.

Higher intakes of vitamin C from parsley can help to lower inflammatory levels in the body. It can also help to prevent diseases, such as clogged arteries, that can lead to strokes. This vitamin C can also assist in preventing diabetes, asthma, colon cancer, and arthritis.

7. Helps to Balance Hormones

Both men and women can suffer from hormonal imbalances that not only lead to feeling unwell, but can cause thyroid disease. Drinking parsley tea can help to balance the hormones in the body. One way it does this is to provide folate, which is a common deficiency in the body that leads to hormonal imbalance.

It can also help women who suffer PMS or other menstrual difficulties. It can help increase fertility for both men and women. The tea can help to reduce swollen and enlarged glands in the body.

8. Helps to Fight Kidney Stones

Kidneys stones can form inside the kidneys and cause extreme pain when they are eliminated from the body. Some people suffer one or two in their lifetime, while other people can suffer an excess. Often extensive medication can be required, or even surgery, to remove problematic stones.

The best solution is to prevent them in the first place, by drinking plenty of water, and drinking a good detox drink, such as parsley tea. Parsley can help to soothe the blood vessels, including arterioles and capillaries, and keep them functioning well. The compounds in parsley can help the body to expel fluidic poisons and mucus.

9. Possesses Antibacterial & Antifungal Properties

Drinking parsley tea can also provide antibacterial and antifungal properties. The tea can help provide benefits to the mouth and teeth, and to the skin. The compounds contained within its essential oils are what can help to eliminate fungus and bacteria.

The oils are located inside the plant’s leaves, roots, and seeds. Drinking the tea or applying it directly to the skin can help related conditions, such as acne caused by bacteria, or help soothe feet infected by athlete’s foot.

how to make parsley tea

How Parsley Tea is Easy to Make

In order for parsley tea to be the most effective, it’s recommended that you make the tea directly from the fresh herbs. We’ve included parsley tea instructions for making the tea from fresh leaves or dried leaves. You can still gain some benefits from drinking dried parsley tea, but if you’re using it to treat serious illnesses or diseases, start from fresh. The dried tea is suitable for when you’re at work and don’t have time to prepare from fresh.

Making Fresh or Dried Parsley Tea

Collect together the following ingredients.

  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves OR 10 ml dried parsley leaves.
  • 250 ml hot water (filtered is best).
  • Teacup or mug.
  • Sieve or tea infuser (that can hold required measurement).

Rinse your parsley clean while you bring the water to a boil. Place the parsley in a tea infuser or a small sieve. Pour the hot water over the tea leaves. Let it steep for about ten minutes. Remove the sieve or infuser, and enjoy your tea. For maximum benefits, you should avoid adding sugar, as sugar makes your pancreas work harder.

You may wish to test the parsley tea after ten minutes. It can become quite bitter if you leave it for the maximum. The taste may not affect some people, but if you find it too strong, add a bit more water.

How Parsley Tea is Generally Free of Side Effects

While most people can consume parsley in the larger quantities needed for cleansing or detoxing, there can still be side effects or cautions that you should be made aware of.

  1. Avoid drinking higher amounts of the tea if you’re pregnant. This is due to its effect on hormonal levels.
  2. Parsley is safe in the amounts that go in food.
  3. If you have kidney or gallbladder disease, or are on blood thinners, check with your doctor first, as its oxalates may affect organ function or interact with medications.
  4. If your symptoms worsen, or you experience any potential side effects, discontinue consuming parsley tea and find another alternative.

Where Can I Buy Parsley Tea?

You may be familiar with other types of tea, but not parsley. Fresh parsley may only be available in the warm or hot months in your city. If you don’t want to grow your own parsley, or you don’t have the time to make it from fresh, you can actually purchase it in boxes.

There are different types of parsley. Curly-leave parsley, or Italian flat-leafed parsley are the most popular. There is also hamburg root parsley. Fresh parsley can be stored for up to a week, while dried parsley, or parsley tea, can be stored for up to a year.

Parsley tea is sold at specialty food and supplement stores. You probably won’t find it at your big box grocer. You can also purchase it from online natural foods shops, or find several different types on Amazon.

How Often Can I Drink Parsley Tea?

While you can drink as much water as you wish throughout the day, you should follow recommended daily consumption requirements for parsley tea. While one cup of tea per week isn’t going to provide many benefits, you should drink no more than two cups of tea per day. Drink one cup of tea in the morning, two hours after breakfast, then the other cup in the afternoon, two hours from lunch.

One cup of tea should equal 250 ml, so you’ll want to ensure you drink at least 500 ml of well-steeped parsley tea each day. Since it has diuretic properties, you’ll want to be near a washroom, as it is truly a “liquid cleanse” and it will excrete all that excess water in your body.

Try a Parsley Tea Cleanse for Body Now

While parsley is one of the beneficial herbs that scientists are still studying, it has proven benefits of cleansing and detoxing every organ in the body. Once you give your kidneys and liver a chance to detox, you’ll start feeling like you have more energy.

You’ll be able to get out of bed in the morning feeling refreshed, rather than exhausted. This is because your organs won’t have to work as hard. If you want to drink a beneficial tea to improve your health and prevent disease, it’s easy to drink a cup or two of parsley tea each day.

Touring the Breweries of Virginia’s Blue Ridge

Touring the Breweries of Virginia’s Blue Ridge

Credit: Adam Sawyer

Folks have been plotting vacations around wine since, well, pretty much forever — something to which Jenn can clearly attest — but I know more and more people who are doing the same thing when it comes to craft beer. I spent a day in Portland, Ore. (after this race … and subsequent wine tastings) checking out the beer scene (and falling in love with Cascade Brewing, which is a must-visit if you’re a fan of sour beers, because they are the pioneers of that movement), and I have a few friends who’ve visited places like Asheville, Grand Rapids, and Boise.

And now, looks like you can add Roanoke to that list. Turns out, Virginia’s Blue Ridge is not only a hiker’s dream, but it’s also a beer lover’s paradise, as I learned earlier this month when I was invited to join a press trip to the region. (As is always the case with trips like these, although my travel and meals were covered, all opinions are entirely my own.)

In addition to conquering two thirds of the Appalachian Trail’s Triple Crown (and yes, you’re definitely gonna get all the details on my hiking adventures later), I also managed to scope out quite a few of the area breweries. A writer’s work is never done, you know?

1. Parkway Brewing Company

Parkway Brewmaster Mike Pensinger

Located just about 10 minutes from the McAfee Knob trailhead, Parkway Brewing is a perfect post-hike stop. But you don’t have to be a hiker to find your tribe here — the brewery also caters to runners with a weekly run (on Thursdays, I believe, but you’ll want to check with them for details), has live music, trivia, and loads of space to sit, sip, and chat, both indoors and out. Oh, and the beer! They’re best known for their Get Bent Mountain IPA (and if they have the grapefruit or orange versions, they’re must-tries), and their Majestic Mullet Kölsch is also popular — and not just for the great name. I opted to try their Breath of Life Honey Wheat Ale, which was part of a collaboration many area breweries participate in annually to support cystic fibrosis research. Each brewery was asked to create their own beer using Virginia oats and local honey, and this one was definitely a winner.

2. Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage

Starr Hill is the second oldest craft brewery in Virginia, and it might be as passionate about music as it is about beer. (In fact, you might’ve come across the label at live music festivals like Bonnaroo or FloydFest.) I visited the Roanoake location, which is where you’ll find some pilot beers (and you can provide feedback) and, of course, catch a live band or two. I only had time for a quick tasting, but quickly found two standouts among their pilot beers: SLAM!, a dunkelweizen with truly rich and complex flavors, and Naked Berliner Weisse, which was light and tart and super refreshing.

3. Big Lick Brewing Company

Looking for a gorgeous spot to try interesting brews and maybe snap some shots for Instagram? Big Lick is the one for you. It’s a stunning building on the inside, and the outdoor patio with twinkle lights, fire pits and a huge mural is just as spectacular. Trust me when I tell you to try the Chai This Milk Stout — it’s everything you love about chai and about stouts, all in one. I was also pretty blown away by their barrel aged brews, and if you’re a whiskey fan, be sure to sample the She’s A Beauty (Bulleit Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged).

4. Soaring Ridge Craft Brewers

If I had to choose one Roanoke brewery at which to spend the whole day, it would probably be Soaring Ridge. It’s another comfortable indoor/outdoor space, and the vibe couldn’t be more laid-back. They’ve got a ring toss game set up and ready to go, and you can also play cornhole (or, “throw bags,” as I’ve been told the serious throwers say). Ask for a Sundown Shandy, if they’re pouring it (it’s seasonal); otherwise, strike up a conversation with the friendly staff behind the bar and let them lead the way.

5. Twin Creeks Brewing Co.

When asked for their origin story, the founders of Twin Creeks just laugh and say, “Honestly? We love beer!” They started out home brewing, continued to improve their skills and recipes, kept adding newer and better equipment, and in 2016, they opened the doors to the first microbrewery in Vinton (which is right in the Roanoke area). They’re serving a few award-winners, but my pick, hands down, was the Across the Pond Brown Ale.

6. Olde Salem Brewing Company

Salem is probably most well-known as the home of Roanoke College, but I have a feeling they’re going to be seeing a lot more beer tourism come their way now that Olde Salem Brewing Company has claimed a spot on the main drag. An impressive remodel (which uncovered some gorgeous windows, giving the huge space fabulous lighting) created a huge, open space where beer lovers — and afficionados of fruity and sour beers in particular — can comfortably gather. They only opened in November 2017, but are already looking at creating an outdoor space and maybe even a rooftop in the future. Olde Salem had only just released a couple of barrel aged offerings, including a Chardonnay Barrel Aged Colorshow Sour Ale With Apricots, which I could’ve enjoyed all day long if I weren’t so busy sampling so many other interesting options, like Forever Young Tangerine Berliner Weisse and Heartbroken in Disrepair Raspberry Wheat. Every beer is named for a song title or lyric, and while you won’t earn any free suds for naming the song and artist, you will earn mad respect. Be on the lookout for some heavy hitters with big hops or high ABV coming soon, because while they’re passionate about sour, tart and fruity, their brewer is also extremely interested in the high gravity drinks.

Now, try as I might, I just couldn’t get to every brewery in the area — at least, not if I wanted to get in a bit of hiking as well. Happily, a few of my fellow journalists had the opportunity to check out some others, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the following:

Ballast Point, which is a San Diego brewery that’s now opened in a few other states, including Virginia. This is the place to be if you’re looking for landscape views and a huge variety of beers on tap. While many of the other breweries have food trucks on property or work with local restaurants on delivery, this is one that serves its own food.

Flying Mouse Brewery focuses on pairing good craft beer with an active outdoor lifestyle, so be prepared to see some serious cyclists (the TransAmerica 76 Bicycle Route goes right by their driveway) and maybe an AT through-hiker or two (the Trail is just a short distance up the road). They offer limited edition brews and name them simply (Flying Mouse 1, Flying Mouse 2, Flying Mouse B, etc.), in an effort to make it easy to go from light to dark (and help people remember what they ordered and liked). Also? The story of their mascot, Bartleby Hopsworth, is adorable.

Are you into the idea of craft beer-centric tourism? What’s your favorite area to visit, and what beyond beer is there to do there? —Kristen

Potato works as wonder in eliminating dark circles. To encourage healthy and soft skin Put cool potato skins under the eyes on parts affected by dark circles. Remove the skin after ten minutes. The dark circles will be lightened.

9. Cucumber for Dark Circles

On the other hand cucumber is an amazing way to get rid of dark circles. Place cucumber slices under the eyes on dark circles. Remove the slices after keeping it on the dark circles for a while. It will settle the dark circles and make your skin look soft, clear and beautiful.

Hearing loss symptoms and treatment

Hearing loss symptoms and treatment

hearingloss-healthylife-werindia

Hearing loss is more common than we realize. Nearly 360 million people worldwide lack some or all of their ability to hear.

As we age we will have problem hearing. However, certain conditions also can affect anyone and result in loss of hearing.

How do we hear? Sound waves move through ear canal and pulse the ear drum and then moves tiny bones inside middle ear. They in turn tap the cochlea and cochlea converts mechanical signals to electrical. This signal passes through auditory nerve and transmits it to brain for further processing.

Why we suffer from hearing loss and what are the signs?

Signs of hearing loss:

  • Requirement of frequent repetition of words
  • Difficulty in following conversation with more than 2 people
  • Other person sounds like mumbling
  • Difficulty in hearing in noisy background – restaurants, malls, conferences
  • Trouble hearing children and women
  • Turning up TV and stereo to high volume
  • Inappropriate answer to questions
  • Ringing in years
  • Stressed about hearing and complaining
  • Annoyed at others for not talking properly
  • Withdraw from social activities and meetings

Medical conditions:

  • History of family with loss of hearing
  • Medications that can harm hearing
  • Diabetes, heart and thyroid problems
  • Exposed to loud sounds for longer period and exposed to explosive noise

The three types of hearing loss are: Sensorineural, conductive and mixed hearing loss.

Sensorineural: Majority have hearing loss of this type. This occurs when there is a problem in sensory and neural structures in the inner ear. A sensorineural hearing loss reduces the intensity of sound hearing and can distort what we heard. People who suffer from sensorineural hearing loss struggle to hear words clearly.  Aging, exposure to loud noise, medicines, illness such as meningitis, measales, genetics, trauma to head and inner ear malformation can lead to sensorineural hearing loss.

Conductive: It is more mechanical in nature – it is physical condition or disease that stops sound from being conducted from the outer to middle ear to inner ear where nerves are stimulated to carry sound to brain. Reason for conductive hearing loss can be treated. Wax buildup, fluid in middle ear, ear infection, foreign object lodged in, ruptured eardrum, trauma to ear.

Mixed hearing loss: In mixed hearing loss a sensorineural hearing loss along with conductive hearing loss. Inner ear, middle and outer ear will be affected making hearing loss worse. Treating conductive hearing loss helps to manage remaining sensorineural hearing loss.

Do you know noise levels are measured in decibels (dB)? Higher the number of noise the louder the noise. Any noise above 85dB is considered harmful. Some common sounds and decibels of sounds that we hear around are:

  • Whispering – 30dB
  • Conversation – 60dB
  • Busy traffic – 70 to 85dB
  • Motorbike – 90dB
  • Listening to music on full volume through headphones – 100 to 110dB
  • Plane taking off – 120dB

How to protect ears?

  • Turn down the volume
  • Avoid loud noise – if needed use ear plugs
  • Give a break to your ears from loud noises
  • Understand side effect of medications before consuming
  • Better not to use cotton swabs as they poke inner ear
  • Do not allow fluid to enter the ear
  • Do not put any liquid inside ear without consulting a doctor
  • Go for regular checkups
  • Managing stress level is important
  • Don’t be on phone for longtime

Hearing loss treatment:

Research shows that hearing aids help in improving social, emotional, psychological, physical well-being of people with hearing loss. Their earning power, communication, emotional stability, mental functioning, physical health all showed improvement with hearing aid and treatment.

Types of hearing aids: Apart from technological interventions other methods also help people to hear.

  • Assistive listening devices (ALDs) or hearing assistance technology (HAT) – for all degrees of hearing loss. The cochlear implant helps millions of people.
  • Hearing loss treatment professionals: Audiologists, hearing aid specialists and otolaryngologists – based on type of hearing loss
  • Audiological advances for hearing loss treatment: Technical advancement to improve the quality of hearing aids are possible by audiological advance technology
  • Hearing loss counselling: Speaking with a qualified professional helps to cope up with hearing loss. Counselling helps to understand the hearing loss and how to manage life with help of other hearing aids
  • Medical advances for hearing loss treatment: At present sensorineural hearing loss is treated with hearing aids or cochlear implants. The other methods include (not restricted to) speech reading, auditory training, custom designed personal hearing aids, tinnitus maskers, assistance in specific listening situation – like telephone, TV or group listening devices.

If you think you or your loved ones have a hearing loss, go through test and talk to doctor. Both diagnostic testing and rehabilitation services are available in many countries.

Everything You Need to Know About Red Light Therapy

Everything You Need to Know About Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy has been used in the context of healthy living for dozens of years. Many swear by its effects, while others claim the benefits are extremely overstated.

As with most health claims, the truth tends to lie somewhere in between. As Healthy But Smart recently noted in their analyses of 45 scientific papers/reviews among nine popular claims:

“Red light therapy has been used for decades, and for decades it has been proved useful. The question is what it is useful for. It seems that the claims that it has mysterious molecular properties and that its panaceaic effects are a result of those are unfounded. The panaceaic effects, themselves, seem to be overstated.”

Nevertheless, the site notes, it is helpful with issues of pain and inflammation, particularly “for pain, joint and musculoskeletal inflammation and a few other inflammatory conditions.”

In the following article, we’ll be discussing the implications as well as some of the apocryphal claims you’ll run into when considering this therapy type.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Commonly found in tanning salons and as a premium feature in fitness clubs like Planet Fitness, red light therapy is defined as low-level laser therapy (LLLT). Unlike many “altnerative health” therapies, this one has quite a bit more scientific backing than most, though users may tend to overstate, or claim benefits as definite that are still unproven.

We’ll be trying to separate the fact from the not-for-certain-fact throughout this piece, so bear with us. Let’s start with one of the better-defined benefits.

Red Light Therapy Benefits: Everything You Need to Know About It | Ideahacks.com

Skin Restoration and Red Light Therapy

A March 2013 article published through Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery found that LLLT was effective in “stimulating, healing,” and restoring the skin.

The authors, among them Pinar Avci, MD, note that “Although skin is naturally exposed to light more than any other organ, it still responds well to red and near-infrared wavelengths.”

This makes red light therapy a particularly effective treatment option as photons “are absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores in skin cells.”

As a consequence of this happening, “electron transport, adenosine triphosphate nitric oxide release, blood flow, reactive oxygen species increase, and diverse signaling pathways are activated.”

It is said that LLLT can activate stem cells, making way for an increase in healing and tissue repair. From a dermatological perspective, red light therapy can benefit those with the following conditions, the authors note:

  • Wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Hypertrophic scars
  • Burns

It also may be beneficial to pregnant women trying to get back their pre-baby bodies or men and women who’ve struggled with obesity, being overweight, and the development of cellulite on legs and arms.

Word of warning, though: some have complained after using red light therapy that their skin feels dried out or sore. This is due to either too long of usage, too high of an intensity, or both.

Consult with a professional before going it alone.

battle acne

Some of the benefits people claim when it comes to red light therapy are still open for debate. But one of the hallmarks of its use has been its ability to battle acne. That’s why it is a popular option among teenagers and adults who struggle with overproduction of facial oils.

Metabolism and Performance

A 2012 article by researchers Cleber Ferraresi, Michael R. Hamblin, and Nivaldo A. Parizotto pointed out recent movements in the use of LLLT activity.

Since 2000, the practice has been largely focused on dermatological effects — see above — but this trio documented the growing use for performance, fatigue, and repair. It was this study in particular that caught the attention of the Planet Fitnesses of the world.

The authors observe that LLLT is moving more rapidly into the fields of medicine “that were not previously thought of as the usual applications such as wound healing and inflammatory orthopedic conditions.”

“One of these novel application areas is LLLT for muscle fatigue and muscle injury,” the authors observe, adding that since science had agreed mitochondria are the main “photoacceptors” inside of cells — and muscles are “rich” in mitochondria — red light therapy would be beneficial in muscle injuries.

As with skin, the light’s ability to generate or stimulate stem cells and progenitor cells “means that muscle satellite cells may respond well to LLLT and help muscle repair.”

Those who stand to benefit the most:

  • Athletes
  • People with injured muscles
  • Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Weight Loss

Because fatigue plays a factor in our desire and ability to workout, it stands to reason that the less of it your muscles have, the more likely you’ll be able to burn calories and create the daily deficiencies needed to reduce weight.

Of course, given the nature of this benefit, you can’t really say that red light therapy creates weight loss, so we wouldn’t call it a direct benefit of LLLT per se.

But the evidence shows that it could certainly lead to it, which is another reason why it makes sense to have this option available in health clubs and why many have signed on board.

working out with red light therapy

Red light therapy is commonly incorporated into the workout day, with some preferring to work out before and others after. The studies for which is more effective are ongoing, but fitness chains like Planet Fitness have embraced the practice altogether.

Facial Aging

A 2009 study out of Germany found that facial aging ties into something called “interfacial water layers,” which “play a key role in biological aging.” Over time these layers can break down the elasticity of your skin.

While the study itself gets pretty technical, the gist of it is this: by using low-level laser therapy, you can stimulate the stem cells needed to preserve elasticity and prevent, slow, or, in some cases, roll back the aging process.

More on the findings by authors Andrei P. Sommer and Dan Zhu can be found at this link.

Osteoarthritis Benefits

Osteoarthritis, commonly found in the knee joint, can cause a great deal of pain and restrict the ease of movement. As a result, sufferers complain of feeling stiff or achy, and it can lead to worse health problems, particularly when it leads one to reduce their activity levels.

But a journal article published in 2014 found that red light therapy can produce beneficial effects when applied to the acupuncture points for those with an osteoarthritic condition.

The researchers tested their theories on two groups — a “placebo” group and a group that received LLLT. The findings: “The results demonstrate that short-term application of LLLT to specific acupuncture points in association with exercise and advice is effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis.”

It should be pointed out here that red light therapy is to be used in conjunction with exercise, so in a way, it’s another indirect benefit as there is no conclusive evidence that LLLT alone would produce long-term benefits.

But it can reduce inflammation enough to make one exercise-ready. And the more you exercise, the more you can strengthen the muscles and joints for problem areas.

More on the study and the methodology can be found here.

Increasing Peripheral Blood Flow

When you hear the term “peripheral vascular system,” you may be curious as to the significance. To put it simply, the PVS pertains to the arteries and veins that aren’t located in the chest or abdomen.

More specifically, it refers to the network located in your hands, feet, legs, and arms. A 2013 single-blind study tested the effects of LLLT on increased blood flow to this peripheral system and found more significant activity in red light therapy subjects compared to those receiving the placebo light therapies.

Of course, the result of this is better circulation, and that can be beneficial to everyone, but especially those who suffer from conditions of the circulatory system.

Wound Healing

A 2014 analysis of 68 individual studies on LLLT as it relates to wound healing showed that the technique had benefits for those healing from wounds and lacerations. According to researchers Maria Emilia de Abreu Chaves, Angélica Rodrigues de Araújo, André Costa Cruz Piancastelli, and Marcos Pinotti found that this form of phototherapy, either through laser or LED, “is an effective therapeutic modality to promote healing of skin wounds.”

The research team added that biological effects promoted by both resources are similar “and are related to the decrease in inflammatory cells, increased fibroblast proliferation, angiogenesis stimulation, formation of granulation tissue and increased collagen synthesis.”

Formulating the right treatment protocol based on the patient is of the utmost importance, so wavelength of light and dosage amounts will vary.

Other Claims About Red Light Therapy

While the studies mentioned above deal with the known benefits of red light therapy, there are a number of other ancillary benefits that may not have the scientific backing to “prove” them outright, but the individuals who regularly receive LLLT treatments swear by them.

In this section, we’ll be discussing each of the claims as well as where they come from and what, if any, clinical research has been performed on the claims. Let’s continue!

LLLT and Psoriasis

While there is still much to be learned about the low-dosage effectiveness of red light therapy on psoriasis, a study in 2011 found that both it and its blue light counterpart — more on that one in a bit — showed some degree of improvements on psoriasis.

However, Healthline notes, the doses were administered in high quantities in a medical setting. “The results may vary greatly if the therapy is performed at home or a salon or wellness center,” the site adds. Lesson: don’t be averse to trying it, but do talk to your doctor first.

Red Light Therapy and Your Thyroid

Keeping in mind these were Brazilian studies and not subject to the same reviews as US studies, some previous research has shown a significant degree of effectiveness for LLLT when dealing with thyroid issues. Forefront Health notes that a routine battery of red light therapy reduced the need for medications even nine months after treatment.

Almost half of the patients in the studies required no more thyroid medication whatsoever while enjoying a “39 to 49 percent” reduction in anti-thyroid antibodies.

Toenail Fungus

This study is a very small one, but it has proven effective. Apparently higher dosages of red light therapy (870-930 nanometers) has shown improvement in toenail fungal infections for 63 percent of the subjects, as reported by Light Therapy Options, LLC.

It is worth noting that studies like this one are not open to the same level of scrutiny and FDA oversight, so do with that what you will.

Melasma

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, melasma is a common skin condition that occurs when brown or grayish-brown patches form on the skin.

This typically affects the face, usually around the “cheeks, bridge of their nose, forehead, chin, and above their upper lip,” the organization adds. It tends to show up on the parts of your skin that are heavily exposed to sunlight.

Alternative health practitioners have started to experiment with red light therapy as a treatment for this non-threatening condition. Hormonal imbalances are a common trigger making women going through pregnancy or menopause susceptible to it.

Eczema

As with other skin conditions, red light therapy is used by some specialists to treat eczema due to its anti-inflammatory qualities.

Red light therapy for stretch marks

Pregnancy brings with it stretch marks. Red light therapy has arisen as one of the more effective ways to treat, giving millions of women more confidence in their post-baby bodies. Men undergoing weight loss are becoming adopters as well.

Red Light Therapy Effects on Tattoos

On the surface, it does seem like red light therapy would be an effective tool for tattoo removal. That’s because a tattoo is essentially skin damage in a fancy pattern. Tattoo artists/applicators use a needle to damage the skin in a pattern that is then filled in with ink to become “permanent.”

But tattoos are not permanent. They can be removed through a variety of methods, which are best shared in another article. Here are some quick suggestions if you just can’t wait.

Laser removal has become the go-to for most, and it can take multiple treatments to various effects. Red light therapy is just one of the options that people use, usually in higher doses.

What makes it effective are two things we’ve already mentioned: increased peripheral blood circulation and reduction of inflammation.

LLLT to Treat Rosacea

Most of what you find with this claim is anecdotal, but with bloggers documenting their progress, it’s hard to simply dismiss the reported results off-hand. Take Julie B. Campbell with Talk Health Partnership, for instance.

Campbell says that she used red light therapy for about three months from June-September “missing very few days” along the way. Her approach was to use a store-bought lamp for 90 to 180 seconds per day.

The results: “I found a 2-minute balance for my skin that seemed to provide optimal results and the itching and burning essentially disappeared, the pimple-like bumps healed and over that summer, I had fewer flare-ups than I’d experienced in a long time.”

Campbell postscripts this by stating that the LLLT treatment did not cure her rosacea, but it had a calming effect and made a significant difference in how she felt inside and out.

Hair Growth Claims

With hair growth claims, it is important to note that LLLT has a stimulating effect on active follicles, but there are no claims that it will activate follicles that have never grown hair.

It’s best used to coax regrowth from receding areas. You can buy red light lamps like this one that is specially designed for hair regrowth.

Back Pain

High-intensity wavelengths between 800 and 1,200 nanometers are sometimes used to treat chronic back pain. When administered, they’re usually delivered through packs that are strapped across the lower back or other affected areas. The boost in blood flow also can expedite the healing process.

Light Therapy and Depression

With treatment for depression, you need to be very careful. Some have made the claims, but there is no scientifically-backed evidence of effectiveness. Also, some suggest shining a light in your eyes as a way to treat it. This is an awful idea. As we’re talking about infrared lights, even at low intensities, it can do long-lasting damage.

Instead, use red light therapy only to treat the conditions it is most effective at treating. It’s possible that by using it to clear up other issues, it can elevate your moods and indirectly combat depression.

Teeth Benefits

Red light therapy’s ability to stimulate the growth of stem cells has given it vast crossover appeal, and that goes for the teeth, or more specifically, the gums.

Products like this one from Hammacher Schlemmer run about $100 but have been reported as having beneficial effects on gum health.

The typical intensity needed to enjoy any benefit from red light therapy is 660 nanometers, and these products fall in the 660-880 range. You may wish to consult with a dentist before giving this a go.

Red Light Therapy’s Effects on Testosterone

There are probably better ways to boost your testosterone, at least from a scientific point-of-view, but if you read this colorfully-titled article from Men’s Health, you may second-guess that.

The gist of it is this: the author tried expensively, supervised red light therapy on his testicles and said “I’ve never felt better,” adding that the treatment ended up “tripling” his testosterone levels.

We probably wouldn’t have included that here since the scientific journals have little to say, but the guy makes some compelling points, and Men’s Health isn’t your everyday, run-of-the-mill blog.

While any publication can overstate their case, there is a degree of vetting that goes on there that at least gives one pause for dismissing the claim.

Lupus Claims

Lupus claims regarding red light therapy are undocumented, and if you go to forums like this one, you’ll hear differing accounts of the experience using it. Some complain the intensity of the light results in rashes and soreness, while others report clearing effects.

Either way, there are better ways to treat lupus, so make sure you consult with your doctor to see what his/her thoughts are.

Side Effects and Precautions

While we’ve covered some of the details in individual sections above, it bears repeating that sensitivities to infrared light vary by person. To see any effectiveness at all, you’ll either want an at-home lamp or torch that emits at a minimum of 660 nanometers.

Anything more than that, and you’ll want to consult with a doctor or specialist before moving on with a treatment option.

The good news is that no study has yet to tie cancer risks to red light therapy, and it could even have soothing effects for those suffering with the condition, though it should not take precedent over other treatments, nor administered without the knowledge and approval of your doctor.

LLLT is largely considered harmless, but there is some disagreement to effectiveness. As we’ve discussed and shown in the examples above, there is a spectrum filled with both researchers and users who see at least some benefit, in some cases to a significant degree.

That said, you’ll want to limit the amount of time that you use infrared light per treatment and try to keep it to just one time per day on the affected area(s).

Also, pregnant women will want to consult with their OBGYN before beginning use. Lastly, remember that while there are a lot of opinions on its effectiveness, there is not yet FDA approval on any of the claims found above.

In Closing

Red light therapy is one form of light therapy treatment, with others including amber, blue, and green. All have their strengths, weaknesses, and intersections, and each shares the common theme of being relatively new in the realm of healthcare.

If you decide to use any of these to treat a legitimate medical condition, don’t do it in a vacuum. Also, explain to your doctor why you would like to try it and see what they have to say.

Now it’s your turn, readers. How many of you have tried red light therapy? What were the effects? Sound off in the comments section below.

7. Get Your Hair Done By Students

One of the most tried-and-true ways to look hot for cheap is letting cosmetology students cut your hair. This gives the students practice on real customers and you an amazing deal on salon services!

But there’s a catch.

Because students are still new, they haven’t had a lot of experience. That’s why they’re practicing! They definitely know their stuff because they just learned it, but this probably isn’t the time to go for a whole new look. Unless you’re cool with a potentially wonky dye job or lopsided bangs, stick to student salons when you need a trim in between cuts.

It might sound scary at first, but don’t fret. These stylists have gone through hours of training and their instructors are always nearby to offer assistance. As long as you know exactly what you want and aren’t afraid to communicate with your stylist, this hack can save you tons of money.

6. Use A Groupon

I don’t know about you, but just because I’m on a budget doesn’t mean I want crappy service. Sure, I don’t want to spend a fortune on my beauty services but I also don’t want to go to a shady salon. I mean, who doesn’t want to feel a little bougie now and then?

For those who want to try top-notch spa and salon services without spending their whole paychecks, Groupon is the perfect solution. You get to experience massages, haircuts, manicures, and so much more for a fraction of the cost. Many places even offer multi-packs, which are great for keeping up with your “lewk” or for a pampering day out with your bestie.

Don’t worry, finding the right Groupon for you won’t take lots of research, either. Just type in your city, go to the “Beauty & Spas” section, and click on the specific category of service you want. Groupon has sweet deals on everything from tanning to blowouts to brows!

5. Shop At A Beauty Supply Store

Here’s the thing.

Makeup and hair products are not cheap. I’m not trying to diss drugstore brands because quite honestly, that’s mostly what I use, but let’s be real: they aren’t always the best quality. If you want high-quality beauty items, you have to be willing to shell out for them.

But what if I told you there was a place with a huge selection of amazing products for hella low prices?

Sally Beauty offers all the fun stuff you find in spas and beauty salons for reasonable prices. Originally for cosmetologists only, Sally Beauty is now open to the public so everyone can cash in on the deals. Whether you want a hard-to-find color of hair dye, a unique shade of nail polish, or just want a giant bottle of shampoo, you can find it here.

This store is perfect for when you run out of a product recommended for you by your stylist but don’t want to spend those crazy high salon prices again. Sally Beauty carries brands like OPI, Ion, and Rusk, so you know this place is legit.

See how Sally Beauty can help you look expensive for less here!

4. Host A Swap With Friends

If you want a whole new wardrobe (or beauty collection) for zero dollars, a swap party is the perfect solution. This fun event lets you and your girls get to revamp your closets, all for basically no money! So how exactly does this work?

Swap parties couldn’t be easier. First, pick a theme. Decide if you want to swap clothes or beauty items. If you go with a beauty theme, be sure to specify that products should be unused or things that don’t touch your body (like perfume or lotion). That way you guys will be spreading love, not germs!

On the day of the party, each guest brings a set number of goodies that have had their run in her life but are still super cool. Line up everything on a rack or table and get to “shopping!” Give each lady a ticket for each item she brought that she can exchange for a new-to-her thing from the group. This keeps people from getting too greedy and stealing all the fun stuff!

Most importantly, don’t forget the wine! If you end up with items that nobody wants (including the people who brought them), consider donating or recycling them. Swap parties are a fun and unique way to hang out with your friends, let you look hot for cheap, and are awesome for the environment.

Want to know more about organizing a swap party with your gal pals? Check out the video below.

3. Try Some DIYs

Feeling crafty? Break out the hot glue gun and sewing machine, because they can do wonders! We all want to follow the latest trends, but not everyone has the budget for a whole new wardrobe 4 times a year. I know I don’t! That’s where DIY projects can help you look hot for cheap.

If you’re the artsy type, you can essentially create a brand new closet full of clothes for yourself. Head to the thrift store or even your own closet and get creative! Suddenly those raggedy old jeans are sexy cut-offs and those boring t-shirts are a flowy skirt.

DIY works extra well with accessories. Handmade jewelry always looks so pretty and unique! With just a few supplies from your local craft store and a little bit of time, you can have a bunch of new pieces no one else has. And it costs a heck of a lot less than buying new accessories from the store!

When you see a trend you love but can’t find it in your price range, just make it for yourself! One of my high school friends did this and people constantly asked where she got her clothes from. Who knows, you could even turn clothes-flipping or jewelry-making into a side hustle!

2. Get Minimal

If you’re a bit of a beauty junkie, you’re going to hate me for this one. As every woman knows, being female in this day and age is hella costly. We’re expected to have nice clothes, a sexy scent, perfect hair, flawless skin, no hair on our bodies, and cool-looking makeup. That all adds up!

One way to look hot for cheap is to cut down on the number of beauty products you use. Now obviously there are things you just won’t want to cut out like deodorant, razors, shampoo, and other essentials. Take a look through your stash and think about what you really need.

Is it truly necessary to have a different primer for your eyelids and face? Do you really need both setting powder and setting spray? How many of your hair products do you really use day-to-day? Any products that you decide you can live without don’t need to be bought again when they run out.

This tip is kind of a long-game hack but will be worth it in time. The fewer things you have to buy week after week when the container is empty, the fuller your wallet will stay.

You can also apply this to your wardrobe. If you don’t go out much, you probably don’t need to keep buying new party outfits. Or if you work in a casual office, stop spending your money on expensive businesswear.

1. Eat A Healthy Diet

Groceries are a heck of a lot cheaper than glamourous skincare products. Tons of studies show that a healthy diet can help you glow from the inside out. According to Good, filling your plate with the right balance of foods is key to feeling and looking amazing. While it’s important to eat a varied diet, here are some of the yummy stuff they suggest:

  • Tomatoes. They have antioxidants like vitamins C and A, which brighten skin, boost your immune system, and help maintain healthy eyes.

Ovarian Cancer — What You Need to Know

Ovarian Cancer — What You Need to Know

Patricia Yarberry Allen, M.D.

is a Gynecologist, Director of the New York Menopause Center, Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical College, and Assistant Attending Obstetrician and Gynecologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She is a board certified fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Allen is also a member of the Faculty Advisory Board and the Women’s Health Director of The Weill Cornell Community Clinic (WCCC). Dr. Allen was the recipient of the 2014 American Medical Women’s Association Presidential Award.

Dear Dr. Pat,

My sister was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She is 56 years old and could not have children due to endometriosis. She was still having regular periods when she was finally diagnosed after a year of increasing symptoms that were always attributed to endometriosis. Before the diagnosis she continued to have very painful periods but also developed pressure in the pelvic area, and against the bladder with lots of urinary frequency, painful intercourse when the penis pushed against the top of the vagina and the cervix. And, over the last three months, she’s had  change in bowel function, some loss of appetite, the inability to eat normal portions of food, and abnormal bleeding patterns, which she attributed to perimenopause and terrible fatigue. She saw her gynecologist about nine months before she became so sick that she was hospitalized and was told that the symptoms she was having early on were consistent with her known diagnosis of endometriosis.  She had a pelvic sonogram that was consistent with a cyst that looked like endometriosis. The doctor did offer a hysterectomy with removal of tubes and ovaries for treatment of the presumed endometriosis but my sister, who had always been terrified of having a hysterectomy, thought she could just wait for menopause and then the symptoms would disappear. She did not return to see her doctor, as she was asked to do, until her symptoms had really progressed.  I am a nurse but I live across the country from her and did not really understand how sick she had become until she was hospitalized. She has been transferred to a large medical center where there is a specialized group in ovarian cancer care. She will need chemotherapy first to shrink the tumors. If all goes well, she will have surgery and then more chemotherapy. In those many months before the diagnosis was finally made, she had seen a gastroenterologist and a urologist in addition to her gynecologist for her annual exam.  How could this have happened?

Sara

Dear Sara,

Your sister had nearly all of the symptoms that we associate with ovarian cancer, but those symptoms could have been due to worsening endometriosis as well. Then there was always the possibility of hormonal change causing the alteration in menstrual bleeding. Ovarian cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose early but your sister’s fear of surgery and clearly her fear of the diagnosis of something serious seem to have added to the difficulty of making  an earlier diagnosis.

As a reminder these are the symptoms of ovarian cancer:

  • Abdominal bloating, indigestion or nausea
  • Changes in appetite, such as a loss of appetite or feeling full sooner
  • Pressure in the pelvis or lower back
  • A more frequent or urgent need to urinate and/or constipation
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Increased abdominal girth
  • Tiredness or low energy
  • Changes in menstruation

Because these signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer have been described as vague or silent and may be symptoms of other conditions, only approximately 19 percent of ovarian cancer is diagnosed in the early stage.

I am so sorry to hear about your sister’s diagnosis, Sara. However, I am glad to hear that she is cared for by a specialized team that can offer her the most advanced treatment available.  I have asked Dr. Melissa Frey, a gynecologic cancer surgeon, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical College and a member of our Medical Advisory Board, to discuss ovarian cancer with our readers.

And while we all know that we’re beautiful exactly as we are, there’s no doubt that sweat makes you, er, sweaty.

So, for all of your fit and sweaty situations, we’ve compiled a great list of some of the companies and entrepreneurs who are making sweat even more beautiful (and have sent us goodies to test out).

via GIPHY

Bath & Body

DirtyBird Soap: You probably think soap is just, er, soap, right? Wrong! Because much of a soap’s ingredients actually gets absorbed in the skin, this soap is formulated specifically with natural oils and other properties (the Energy soap actually has caffeine in it) to help you to get clean and feel awesome. Oh, and the reusable containers snap shut so that you can take your DirtyBird soap wherever you go.

Priori LCA fx160 – 2xFoliant Peel + Scrub: Even if you are religious about getting out of that sweaty sports bra and showering asap after a workout, I’m gonna go ahead and bet that you occasionally deal clogged pores, build up of gunk, etc. For me, that’s particularly true because of all the sunscreen I slather on. This scrub from Prior works on body and face, contains lactic acid for a mild chemical peel, microspheres for exfoliation, and has an LCA complex for moisturization and protection. So, basically, you can use it to really do some serious exfoliating — but it’s packed with anti-irritants to keep that skin from getting angry.

Power Clean Soap Active Charcoal Bar: Yes, charcoal can get you clean. Very clean. And this bar smells great! Made with activated charcoal, dead sea mud, essential oils of scotch pine, cedarwood, and fir needle, and nothing artificial, it leaves your skin feeling amazing after a hard workout.

Hair

Aussie Sprunch Hairspray:
You know those days when you want a little hold but not, like, a TON of hold on your curls? This is the hairspray for that. And, with UV protection, it’s fantastic for keeping your curls (natural or not) shiny and protected for those outdoor bootcamps and runs!

Herbal Essences White Strawberry & Sweet Mint Shampoo, Conditioner, and Dry Shampoo: This entire line is color-safe, gluten-free, paraben-free and ph-balanced. And! It smells great. Whether you’re looking for a new dry shampoo or an everyday go-to shampoo and conditioner, we are loving it.

Meet Grace Eleyae satin-lined hats that look cool on the outside and keep your hair nourished and prevent breakage with satin on the inside. Plus, the hats are lightweight and look darn cute. And if hats aren’t your thing, they have satin-lined headbands, too!

Kerabotanica Slay and Play: Sure, showering after a workout is ideal, but sometimes you and your hair just don’t have the time. This is where Kerabotanica’s Slay and Play Refreshing Hair Mist makes for the perfect gym bag essential. Made with a natural blend of coconut oil, sweet almond oil and blue agave extract, it moisturizes, refreshes and revitalizes, all while making your locks smell like French bergamot and sweet South Africa freesia.

milk + sass Macaron for Hair: Yes, we wrote about this one in regards to detangling kids’ hair, but it also works super well for grown-ups and is the perfect brush to throw in your purse, gym bag or suitcase. It’s great and gentle on wet or sweaty hair, and it’s even got a mirror built in. Plus, it comes in so many fun and bright colors!

Make-Up

Moroccan Magic lip balmYou probably know about argan oil for your hair, but how about your lips? We tried this awhile back and it helped us to break our Vaseline addiction. Still loving it (especially the Peppermint Eucalyptus!). It’s also super great to use under lipstick as a natural moisturizer.

Yuni Glow Between: So you want to get that fresh, dewy look without using a ton of products — or a ton of time? One of Yuni’s newest products (watch for it coming out in August) is this hydrating jelly micro mist, which can be applied before make-up to help hydrate and prep skin, or over make-up later in the day to help protect skin from environmental aggressors … and to provide a little extra glow.

Skincare

FRÉ Revive MeLooking for a moisturizer that’s replenishing, but still light and is actually designed for skin that gets sweaty during workouts? That’s exactly what this is. The daily treatment serum keeps skin hydrated and nourished with minerals and vitamins — and it even combats the short and long-term damage — such as premature aging, dryness and skin fatigue — caused by harmful environmental conditions.

Yuni Beauty Yunicorn Celestial Jelly Detoxifying Mask Cleanser: We’re a bit obsessed with Yuni, if you can’t tell already — after all, their tagline is “mindful beauty for an active life.” And this cleanser and mask is one of the newest products to claim a spot on our shelf (it’ll be released to the public in August, so watch for it!). Made with sea lavender and honeysuckle, this shimmmery gel glides on smoothly, feels cool and calming on our skin (especially nice post-workout), smells fantastic, and wipes away easily, taking all the yuckies with it. It can be used as a mask, too, for a little extra pampering — just leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing.

Willing Beauty Sleepover Replenishing Night Cream: Take your beauty sleep one step even more beautiful with this night cream that has a moisturizing mix of antioxidants and brightening fruit acids that help encourage cell turn over and the stimulation of collagen. So rich and creamy feeling, and your skin wakes up so refreshed in the a.m.!

colorescience Daily UV Protector Whipped Mineral Sunscreen: We’re very particular about our sunscreen, and we absolutely love how light and airy this goes on. With just a hint of color, it also gives you a little bit of coverage without being nearly as heavy as a foundation.

Reason Y Workout Warrior Mask: Designed specifically to be used post-workout, this face mask uses grapefruit extract to help promote cellular health and reduce the risk of infections. It also leaves your skin feeling (and smelling) so fresh and so clean (clean).

Braun Silk-épil 9-961V: Don’t want to spend all your time shaving your legs? Welcome to the club. This at-home hair removal and exfoliation system even includes a massage pad to stimulate blood circulation and improve skin appearance. Works in the shower or out!

Young Living Cool Azul Sports Gel: In case you’ve got any aches, pains or general soreness from your active pursuits, this stuff is awesome. Formulated with 10 percent essential oils, it cools with peppermint, oregano and Dorado Azul, along with menthol and camphor. It simply feels awesome when you rub it in achy joints or muscles, and a little goes a long way.

Accessories

Go Dash Dot Go Tote: Now, where’s a girl to put all that awesome beauty stuff, plus work and life and on-the-go stuff? IN THIS BAG. We already loved the Infinity Bag from Go Dash Dot, but this new tote is slightly bigger with two external padded pockets for laptop/tablets. There’s also an exterior slip pocket with snap closure on the back for your phone, activity tracker or other smaller items. Basically, it’ll totes fit ALL your stuff. (See what we did there with totes since it’s a tote … )

Nike Helix EliteBesides just looking darn cool, this lightweight, aerodynamic combined lens-frame features rubber channels and ventilated temple arms for fog prevention and increased airflow. It’s ideal for your next outdoor workout. Just put them on and go!

Qalo Stackable Rings: Silicone rings aren’t new by any means, but these ones that stack — allowing you to mix and match colors and textures while still getting your workout on? We adore. So fun, so cute, so sweat-proof and you really don’t notice them when you’re lifting weights, climbing ropes or doing pull-ups!

Have you tried any of these? Got any others we should try? Do tell! —Jenn & Kristen

How to Use Oregano Oil to Heal Warts (Fast and Naturally)

How to Use Oregano Oil to Heal Warts (Fast and Naturally)

While warts are generally harmless, they can be unsightly, annoying, and embarrassing for people who get them. Warts are a type of virus, a human papillomavirus, that can grow on the hands or feet. They’re characterized by large globe-shaped off-white growths on the skin. They can be classified as a type of skin infection.

oregano oil for warts

Warts are highly contagious, and are often caught from gyms or a friend or partner who also has them. There can be certain risk factors, such as eczema, that can lead to susceptibility of warts. Warts can also be mixed up with other skin conditions, such as calluses. While there is great embarrassment surrounding them, they’re a bit different than warts that affect the genitals or that cause cancer, or coldsores that affect the lips.

Common warts or plantar warts can affect hands or feet, but they can be transmitted to the face or other parts of the body. There are also other types, mosaic, periungla, flat, etc, but they’re basically the same.

Most people have been exposed to warts by the time they’re young adults. Most people have strong immune systems that can fight off the virus. For a smaller percentage, they’ll get warts on their hands. Warts have a dated history going back as far as 400 BC.

While one wart may heal quickly, they can create susceptibility. Often one or more warts may be grouped together. Some people suffer recurring warts for months at a time before they go away. They’re most commonly suffered by younger people. Other people may suffer for years. It’s important to treat warts when they are first noticed, in order to help them to quickly heal, and to prevent them from spreading to other parts of the body.

There are many prescription treatments for warts, as well as over-the-counter remedies. Even surgery may be an option, which is called cryotherapy. Many people will want to quickly treat a wart upon first appearance, so there may not be time to head to the clinic to get a prescription or have surgery. There are a few natural but effective ways to treat warts, including using oregano oil.

Oregano oil is plant-based, and is a powerful oil with many properties that can provide healing benefits to the skin. The good news is that you won’t have to suffer painful burns from wart removal surgery, or the excessive dryness that salicylic acid causes. You also won’t have to suffer the antibiotic resistance that can result when taking pills or using topical ointments.

What is Oregano Oil?

Oregano oil is a type of essential oil that is made from the oregano plant. This is the same plant that is used to make oregano for cooking. The oil itself is derived from the leaves and flowers of the small green-leafed plant. It has a strong, pungent, but appetizing smell. This plant’s Latin name is Origanum vulgare. It’s a hardy perennial herb that can grow in gardens or containers, and is grown all over the world. It’s from the mint family called Lamiaceae.

Oregano oil has a history that dates back at least 2500 years for being a useful home remedy. It’s been used in many folk medicines across the globe for many years.

The essential oil is mostly derived from a type of wild oregano that grows in the Mediterranean region of the world. Once the oil is pressed from the plant, it’s processed and then bottled into small amber-glass coloured bottles.

In oily form it still smells exactly like the dried or powdered oregano you’d use in your cooking, particularly in pizza or Italian dishes. Many people grow oregano in their gardens. Oregano oil feels a bit caustic when applied directly to the skin, but it has beneficial healing properties, while its aroma is useful for aromatherapy. The oil is helpful for cleaning blocked sinuses and clearing a foggy mind when you have a bad viral bug.

For this reason, oregano oil is a great all-purpose treatment for helping to boost the body’s immune function. This naturally includes helping to kill the virus on the skin that causes warts, and to help them to heal quickly. It can even be used as a preventative.

Why Does Oregano Oil Work?

Oregano oil contains natural compounds that work to kill off harmful microorganisms on the skin. Oregano oil has special antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. This is due to its high phenol content. These phenols are natural phytochemicals that have antioxidant effects.

There are also many other compounds, such as thymol, terpene, naringin, carvarcrol, and more. Together, these work at giving a boost to immune system health.

Oregano oil is packed full of beneficial compounds, as it actually takes over 450 kilograms of wild oregano plants to make half a kilogram of oil. The oil’s active ingredients are preserved within alcohol.

These compounds work at breaking through the outer cell membranes of your skin to help protect it from harmful microorganisms.

Oregano oil works much like antibiotics would to kill the virus that causes warts on the skin. This is so the wart will stop growing larger, and that further warts in the surrounding region will be prevented. The moisturizing properties of the oil will also help to loosen that dry tough skin so that it sloughs off faster.

Oregano oil is used for many more healthcare purposes than getting rid of warts, but chances are that this will be your first introduction to the oregano oil. Once you begin using it you’ll find many other ways to use it for skincare remedies.

Why Should I Worry About Warts?

Most warts are harmless and you may experience only one on your fingers. But over time, they can become increasingly larger and harder. Sometimes they exert pressure against the nerves in the fingers—or under the toes—which can become quite painful.

Since warts is caused by a virus, it can also spread. People may be hesitant in shaking hands with you, or touching your hand, if you have a wart or two on your hand. Warts can even spread to the eyes or the mouth, where they can cause great discomfort. For this reason, warts should be quickly treated with oregano oil before significant discomfort can occur.

Oregano oil is one treatment that’s used by natural health practitioners to stop the growth and development of warts.

How Do I Know It’s a Wart & Not a Callus?

Everyone gets calluses on their feet or their hands at some point. While a callus usually causes few issues, a wart can be more serious. But at the beginning, many people may not know if they have a wart or a callus forming. It’s important to understand the differences, so each can be properly treated.

A callus usually hurts when you push straight down on it. This is usually due to pressure that’s being placed on one part of your hand or your foot. Calluses look like dry, dead skin and easily slough off.

If it’s a wart, then it will hurt if you place pressure on the sides. Warts often have tiny dark spots that are the blood vessels poking up. They may also look like open sores.

how to use oil of oregano for planters warts

How to Use Oregano Oil for Warts

You may be able to dip a bit of oregano oil onto a q-tip and apply it directly to your finger wart or toe wart. But it can feel a bit caustic against your skin. You shouldn’t apply it to your face or sensitive regions of the body without first diluting it with a carrier oil. You should never apply it to your eyes, even though they can suffer warts too.

Here are a few ways to apply the oil to a wart :

  • Apply the oil directly to fingers or feet, or other “tougher” regions of the body.
  • Dilute the oil with olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil before applying it to your face, arms, legs, or torso, as the oil can burn.
  • Only use a drop or two of the oil. You don’t want the oil to fall off and stain your clothing. Dab it with a bit of tissue if you have applied too much.
  • Reapply the oil once every three hours until you see improvements.
  • Apply the oil from four to six times throughout the day.
  • Reapply the oil after you have washed your hands, or taken a shower or a bath.
  • Some people like to apply the oil, then apply a strip of duck (duct) tape to their fingers. This keeps the oil in place, and some people swear by the duck tape treatment even though no one knows why it works. It’s possible that it blocks air from getting to the virus, which needs oxygen to breathe in order to reproduce.
  • Wash your hands frequently when out in public or at work, in order to avoid catching other skin infections, or transmitting your wart infection to others.
  • It should take about a week for the wart to begin to reduce size.

Other Oregano Oil Benefits for Skin

Oregano oil can also have additional benefits for the skin. Since warts is a viral infection of the skin, it can also lead to other annoying skin conditions, making the skin’s immune function weaker.

  • The compounds in oregano oil will help to prevent other skin infections.
  • Oregano oil will soothe other skin inflammation, such as eczema, psoriasis, or allergies that can also make skin susceptible to infection.
  • Use oregano oil as a preventative on your fingers if you have a special occasion coming up.

Precautions & Warnings

In order for an oregano oil for warts treatment to work effectively, you should follow some precautions and warnings when using it.

  1. Purchase only a high-quality oregano essential oil. Be aware that there are some cheap knock-offs that are made from thyme, Spanish oregano, and cultivated oregano. These won’t work as effectively as real oregano oil.
  2. Do not ingest oregano oil. Use it for topical application (on the skin) only.
  3. Do not use the oil on children, pregnant or nursing women. Children have a habit of licking their fingers.
  4. If you’re allergic to other plants from the Lamiaceae family, such as mint, lavender, sage, or basil, chances are you may also be allergic to oregano too.
  5. If you experience any type of rash, hives, or allergic reaction when using oregano oil then stop using it.
  6. Consult a doctor if your warts are not improving at all within two weeks, or they are spreading to other parts of your body.
  7. If your abnormal skin growths are openly bleeding, pus-filled, black in colour, or hurt, it’s possibly they are a different type of skin infection and you should seek immediately medical advice.

Closing Thoughts

The word “oregano” also means “joy of the mountain”. Even smelling this herb can make you feel happy. It’s often used in aromatherapy to boost the spirits and energy of a person who is suffering from a bad flu bug.

Oregano oil is affordable for everyone, and much cheaper than buying a prescription medication from the pharmacy, or paying for a surgical procedure to remove your warts at the medical clinic. The oil naturally softens and moisturizes dry, flaking skin, particularly when the wart is near the end of its life.

It’s helpful to keep a small bottle of oregano oil in your medicine cabinet. At first sight of a wart outbreak you can quickly treat it, rather than waiting to make an appointment at the clinic to get a prescription medication. And since oregano oil is naturally-sourced, you can feel confident in using it on your skin, and not having to worry about putting carcinogens in your body, or killing the beneficial bacteria on your skin.

While warts are a generally harmless skin condition, if you’re hoping to look your best for an event ahead, begin your oregano oil treatment today. Soon your hands and your feet will look smooth and clear of any embarrassing skin growths. Now you can look and feel your best!

A Call for Women Who Experience Pain with Sex and for Health Care Providers Who Treat Them

A Call for Women Who Experience Pain with Sex and for Health Care Providers Who Treat Them

Photo of a peach with the text "How do you experience pain with sex?"

By Guest Contributor |

by Marta Milkowska

My name is Marta Milkowska and I am a graduate student at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. I am working on a project aimed to better understand the problem of pain during sex – something experienced by many women. This summer, with support from Our Bodies Ourselves and the Harvard Kennedy School’s Women in Public Policy Program, I am seeking interviews with individuals who fall into one of the following three categories:

  • Women ages 16 to 35 who experience pain during sex
  • Women who have successfully reduced or eliminated pain during sex
  • Physical therapists and medical clinicians (such as ob/gyns, family practice physicians, and internists) with experience diagnosing and treating pain during sex

If you are in one of these groups and are willing to take part in a 45 minute interview, please fill out this sign up form and I will contact you by email to set up an interview.

75% of women experience pain with sex

Although most women experiencing painful sex feel alone, the problem is sadly common. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology 75% of women experience pain with intercourse or penetration at some point in their lives. Chronic and persistent pain affects up to 22% of women. In fact, according to the NY Times, “pain with sex is up there in prevalence with migraine and low back pain, and yet it is woefully understudied and rarely discussed.” Many women told us they don’t discuss their pain with close friends and family or even with their sexual partners. They may be embarrassed and overwhelmed, or they may think that silence will somehow “protect” their partners. This silence understandably further exacerbates the emotional and psychological stress.

Healing journey

Depending on the root cause and severity of the pain, it may be addressed by  measures such as adequate use of lubrication, better understanding of the sexual arousal process, more open communication with a partner, and/or simple relaxation home-based exercises or pelvic floor physical therapy.

The first step in the healing journey is to accept that the pain is not something women must learn to “tolerate,” and that sometimes there are solutions that can help. The second is to figure out, if possible, what is at the root of the problem. An excellent place to begin educating yourself is with texts like “Our Bodies, Ourselves.”  The OBOS website includes articles on Pain During Intercourse or Penetration  and Vulvodynia, as well as multiple articles on female anatomy. Many therapists suggest self-help protocols with low-risk and easy relaxation and stretching exercises. We will be building a compendium of those as we move forward in our research.

If a woman is experiencing conditions such as vaginismus, the pain sometimes can be successfully treated with physical therapy. (See this article by a SF-based physical therapist, Rachel Gelman). Many women have tried approaches that appear to pose minimal risk, and sometimes these approaches have offered significant relief, although a strong evidence-base is still lacking. Certified physical therapists who have had considerable success in helping women with pain during sex exist, but sadly, are still are not widely available, and absent in many countries. A comprehensive list of certified pelvic floor physical therapists does not seem to exist, but the Section on Women’s Health of the American Physical Therapy Association does offer some resources.

Regardless of the root cause, one of the key steps towards healing can begin with more open conversation. For example, we started monthly Women Sharing Circles – a safe space where women can come together to discuss their sexuality. If you would like to start a similar group, let me know.

If you, or any of your female friends are suffering from pain during sex, or have found treatments that alleviate their pain, I would like to talk to you whether or not you have already sought medical care and whether or not you already have received a diagnosis (for example, vaginismus or vulvodynia). Please sign up here, and I will be in touch with you soon. Thank you!
