Sitting for long periods of time can be as harmful to health as not exercising, according to Keith Diaz, Ph.D., a professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University. A lack of physical activity combined with being immobile over long periods of time sets people up for heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain, and other conditions. Being sedentary raises levels of blood sugar and triglycerides, and pooling blood in the legs can raise blood pressure. Diaz recommends people build movement plans to counteract the risks of sitting. Simply standing is not enough.
