How Ivy Style Became One Of the Civil Rights Movement’s Most
Powerful Weapons

Despite the Ivy League origins of the Ivy style, it became a look adopted by many prominent Black figures in the Civil Rights Movement, who often tailored it to fit the movement’s needs. Through respectability politics, they used the look to communicate their equality and juxtapose the horrible treatment they were receiving under Jim Crow laws. However, Black Panther Party members chose a different uniform to present an image of power, resistance, and a celebration of Black aesthetics and culture. After the assassination of Dr. King, some activists came to realize that respectability politics and Ivy style were not working out in the way they’d hoped, and Dashikis and berets became the clothing of rebellion.
